January Athlete of the Month: Christine Seymour

A big congratulations to Christine for being our January athlete of the month. Christine busted her butt in 2018 and hit some major goals inside and outside the gym. She is down 30 pounds this year and is a testament to someone who can accomplish great things when they stay committed and trust the process!
When did you start CrossFit and why?
I think it was 2008? I was working with a trainer who moved away, and he introduced me to a guy who was starting to do CrossFit at Gold’s in Marlboro.  Then in 2012, we found ourselves without a gym and Rob stumbled upon Sobo.  (The rest is history!)
What is you favorite movement?
Cleans, jerks, snatches….
What is your least favorite movement?
Burpees and running. 🙂
Tell us a little about your life outside the gym (family, job, hobbies, interests, etc)
I work full time managing a very busy Optometric office in Mansfield with nearly 20,000 patients.  Outside of work and CrossFit, we (Coach Rob and I) have 2 daughters in college.  We enjoy going out with friends, traveling and having the girls home.  (This is our first year as empty-nesters, and it’s been incredibly quiet and weird without them around.)
What were you doing before CrossFit?
I’ve always been a gym rat, had the typical globo gym membership, did a lot of walking (especially when the girls were young and in strollers), went to yoga and pilates, Curves, etc.  I hit a wall with working out and found this guy who was running “exclusive” boot camp classes at Gold’s.  You had to be invited to his 6am classes and boy did he kick our asses.  We had no idea that we were doing CrossFit.  (He was pulling the exercises off the main site back in the day!)
What were your goals when joining CrossFit and how have you achieved those goals?
I just wanted to stay fit and healthy. Fast forward to being a little older with a thyroid issue, and struggling for years with my weight.  Nicole Torres came back to PCF as a nutrition coach and I had already tried so many different avenues of “dieting” and thyroid doctors.  I was really at my wit’s end, this was my last shot.  I started the WellFed prorgram on Feb. 4, 2018 and I am down 30 pounds. Now I’m just looking forward to coupling my nutrition with being able to perform better in my WOD’s, keeping the weight off and being healthy.
How has CrossFit affected your life outside the gym?
Most of you know that I am quiet and more reserved than my “other” half.  CrossFit has given me a little bit of confidence and self esteem that I have never had.  I will never be as loud, out spoken or just “out there” as my husband, but I am definitely not as shy and introverted as I used to be.
What advice would you give to someone new to CrossFit or thinking about giving it a shot?
Pennant is the place to come.  We have the most amazing community of people. We come from all walks of life and have the most caring and giving community around (yes I’m biased).  We have the best coaching out there. Our coaches have come to know each individual athlete and what they are capable of. I know that I am personally challenged when I walk into a class and I’m always amazed that they know how to push me and what I’m capable of doing!  There are not a lot of boxes out there that program for the elite athletes, but also the average person (me) or the ones that are limited based on mobility and/or injury.  You will always feel like a participant in the class no matter what the variation of the WOD is.
You will walk into Pennant and immediately feel like you’ve been coming for years!
